Termly Reflections

Termly Reflections

Term 1 reflections
The main topics we tackled for Term 1 were the periodic table, atomic structure, acids and bases as well as writing chemical equations. We did touch on Salt Preparation but it would only primarily be tested in Term 2. When I received my test paper back after marking, I was disappointed with my results. I had gotten 30.5 out of 45, which was a dismal B3. After reading through the script I found that most of my mistakes stemmed from the following reasons: Deficient understanding of the atomic structure and ineptitude in writing chemical equations. I also did very badly for Section C which mainly tests one's grasp of Reading & Reasoning skills. I feel that I did not undergo adequate revision and thus was poorly prepared for this test. In order to rectify this, I need to be more pro-active in seeking out help when I come across an issue I am unclear about. I must devote more time into strengthening my foundation in these subjects as I believe they are topics which can be handled fairly easily if one has a clear understanding of concepts and knows how to apply this grasp appropriately.

Term 2 reflections
This term, the topics we studied on were salt preparation, reflection and refraction. When I saw the marks on my test paper, my heart fell. I had done horribly for this test, not even managing to scrape a B grade but instead getting 26.5 out of 45, meaning I had attained a miserable C5 grade. As I flipped through my test paper I realised that I had lost 9 marks in the MCQ section alone, most of it due to my poor foundation in salt preparation. However, I also lost an unforgivably large amount of marks in Section B from refraction and reflection. I was very downcast, but this term's lackluster results served as a wake-up call for me and motivated me to work harder for science. I desperately need to rectify my understanding of the topics tested this term to improve my chances of obtaining a decent grade for the End Of Year Science Examinations. I will attempt to accomplish this through constant revision and being unhesitant in requesting clarifications when encountering an unclear concept.

Term 3 reflections
Reproduction in man and plants, as well as lenses & colours, were the topics we had to study this term. Fortunately I did alright in the term test, scoring a 34.5 out of 45 which is an A1, albeit a borderline one. To my consternation, I discovered that I had made several careless mistakes in the test, such as forgetting that light rays should be continued even after being traced back to the focal point, and misinterpreting a diagram (costing me 2.5 marks). Thankfully I managed to get most of the questions about reproduction in man and plants correctly, thanks to more in-depth revision as compared to previous terms. However I believe there is much room for improvement and I will continue to fortify my foundation in the tested topics this term. I believe that this term's results mean that the door for me to do well in EOY is not completely closed, but I will need much more revision to strengthen my grasp of Science in order to have a chance to comfortably clear the final hurdle.
